NORTH SMITHFIELD – Three people from Woonsocket are facing charges after a road rage incident on Route 146 turned into a physical fight where two of the parties were injured.
Roger Delorme, 42; Daniel Vargas, 21; and Aliyah Crespo, 23, were all charged with assault and disorderly conduct following an incident in front of CT Gas on Smithfield Road on Friday, August 16.
According to the arrest reports, the incident began on Route 146, where Delorme told police he was driving northbound and a female driver in a Honda Accord kept cutting him off. He and the other driver, later identified as Crespo, began exchanging words while driving.
At the intersection of Greenville and Smithfield Roads, another party, identified as Vargas, stopped his vehicle in the roadway, blocking Delorme from moving. Vargas would later tell police that he was on the phone with Crespo, his girlfriend, heard the verbal altercation and came to see if she was ok. He said his intent was to stop Delorme’s vehicle until police arrived.
Accounts by the two parties on what happened next differed. Delorme told officers that Vargas got out of his vehicle and picked up a handful of rocks to throw at Delorme and his truck, so he picked up a fiber glass pipe he found on the ground for self defense.
Vargas told police that Delorme jumped out of his truck and rushed at him with a pipe.
Crespo arrived at the scene after the two men were already in a physical altercation and jumped in, throwing punches at Delorme. The fight eventually ended and both parties called police.
Police note that Delorme was bleeding from his ear and nose. Vargas, who later spoke to police at the station, had a deep laceration on his forearm from being struck, seemingly with the pipe Delorme said he used.
“It was determined that all parties involved acted disorderly and all parties involved at one point or another assaulted someone else,” noted a report on the incident filed by Sgt. Benjamin Freeman.
All three were arrested, and arraigned in Third District court on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
The state criminal database shows that Delorme also has an open case out of Woonsocket stemming from an incident in April, with charges of felony assault, assault on a health care provider, conspiracy and disorderly conduct. His previous criminal record dating back decades includes charges for vandalism; disorderly conduct; entering a building with felonious intent; domestic assault; violation of a no contact order; violation of a restraining order; refusal to relinquish a telephone; resisting arrest; conspiracy; receiving stolen goods and driving with a suspended license.
Vargas and Crespo appear to only have traffic violations in the database.
Delorme and Crespo were release on $3,000 personal recognizance and Vargas was release on $1,000 recognizance. All three are due back in court Tuesday, Oct. 8.
They should had been put in jail no bail
Agree. Judges or magistrates are largely responsible for letting bad actors out, repeat offenders out. Delorme has a record already, as long as his arm. Yet let out again on bail. This is exactly why repeaters know they can get away with breaking the law over and over and why, ppl have lost hope in getting justice, lack belief in the court system. A true slap in the face to police who work so hard out there 24/7 also.
It’s called due process and it’s been around since 1215
