GLOCESTER – A Democrat running for the District 40 seat representing Coventry, Foster and Glocester announced her platform this week, pointing to issues she’s discussed with voters during time on the campaign trail.

Linda Nichols pointed to social security taxes, noting that two states – Nebraska and Missouri – do not charge them.

“With the high cost of living how do they expect the seniors to survive?” asked Nichols. “I will do research on the two states that don’t have to pay social security taxes and bring (the program) here to Rhode Island, and also work on the issues with Medicare and Medicaid. We need to remember not all seniors have a pension or 401K. Seniors want to stay in their homes as long as they can.”

Nichols also noted the lack of affordable housing in the state, noting that rents are so high that for many, it eats up most of their income.

“Cities and towns say they want the housing but do nothing to break down the barriers or welcome housing,” she said.

She noted that the current minimum wage is not enough for Rhode Islanders to afford housing or daycare.

“People are fed up and ask, ‘does anyone really care about the people?'” said Nichols. “It has gotten so far away from the real issues. It’s all about power and control, and the blame game.”

“I find the biggest political issue in this campaign has been staying focused on the issues that are affecting all of us and working together to get things done for the people,” said Nichols. “Put politics aside and come up with solutions… common ground. I love Rhode Island and plan on working for the people.”

“It’s not about being a Democrat or a Republican, or independent it’s, ‘what are you going to bring to the table?'” Nichols said, noting that for her, the focus is unity and problem solving.
