Cross country meet
Visit Eccleston Field at 60 Callahan School St. on Wednesday, Oct. 9 for a cross country meet with teams from Callahan & Steere Farm Elementary Schools as well as Burrillville Middle School and High School. The annual meet will start at 3:15 p.m. and visitors are invited to attend and cheer on the runners.
Auditions continue
Auditions for a performance of Disney’s High School Musical will continue this week at the Assembly Theatre at 26 East Ave. Actors of all ages, ethnicities, abilities, and gender identities are encouraged to audition at the theater on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Haunted Library
Jesse Smith Memorial Library at 100 Tinkham Lane will hold its annual Haunted Library event – with a creepy carnival theme – on Friday, Oct. 11, with tours starting at 7 p.m. The library will transform into a spine-chilling carnival of frights and brave visitors are invited for a free haunted adventure filled with eerie clowns, twisted characters and sinister surprises lurking in every corner. The last tour will leave at 8:30 p.m.
The annual event is not suitable for young children.
Stargazing
Visit Steere Farm Elementary School at 915 Steere Farm Road on Friday, Oct. 11 for a free stargazing event from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Bring the family along with blankets and chairs to learn about astronomy while observing the stars and constellations.
Help hurricane victims
Due to the significant devastation caused by Hurricane Helene and extreme flooding, Berard Desjarlais American Legion Post 88 is taking up monetary donations to help the victims in Asheville, N.C., one of many of the hardest hit areas. The post noted that any monetary donation will help.
The group is accepting donations of cash or check, made payable to Berard Desjarlais Post 88, which can be dropped off at the Binns Building at 111 Chapel St. on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 1 to 6 p.m. or during the group’s next meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Donation receipts will be available upon request. Donations will also be accepted at Lawrence Brothers Hardware on Chapel Street in Harrisville.
All donations received by the end of the meeting on the 16th will be distributed in the form of check or gift cards through the Francy Burdett American Legion Post 70 in Asheville, N.C.

Cuts for a Cause
Visit Beauty’s Edge Salon at 975 East Ave. on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. help out with Cuts for a Cause, a fundraiser to benefit Kerri Hall and her battle with breast cancer. Donate a lock of hair or get a cut at the event, at a cost of $20 for men or $25 for women, with no appointment needed.
Oktoberfest
Dev’s Tavern at 341 Chapel St will host Oktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., to include beer, brats, sauerkraut, potatoes, mac n cheese and pretzels. Tickets cost $25, include food and domestic and Octoberfest beers and can be purchased in advanmce at the business. The outdoor event has a rain date of Sunday, Oct 13.
