NORTH SMITHFIELD – Saint Antoine Community recently added 24 private assisted living suites for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The new unit, known as Primrose Lane, received a $250,000 legislative grant toward its construction with help from U.S. Sen. Jack Reed.
“During the pandemic, we identified a growing need for affordable memory care,” said Melissa Smith, director of marketing and communication for the St. Antoine Community. “We took an existing wing and flipped it, creating 24 private suites and adding community areas, porches, and a secure outdoor area. We wanted to provide assurance to families that we understand the need for privacy and dignity.”
The residents of Primrose Lane not only have access to medical care and therapies from the St. Antoine’s community, but they will be able to stay in place even as they move to Medicaid, a relief for many families concerned about funding their loved one’s housing cost, Smith said.
“Saint Antoine Community knows that this population is living longer and memory care can place such an added burden on families who cannot manage all their needs at home,” said Tammy Summiel, Villa at Saint Antoine executive director. “There are few alternative options as to where you can send someone with limited financial resources and a diagnosis of dementia, but this new level of care, with a Medicaid waiver option, will allow residents to stay and age in place while their disease progresses.”
The unit is currently about half full at this time, with 12 applications being vetted, Smith said.
Primrose Lane features airy and bright rooms, which overlook woodsy areas outside, an important feature for new residents who are accustomed to living in more rural areas, Smith said.
“It feels more like home for people who grew up around here, in North Smithfield or Burrillville,” she said.
The large outdoor area has a walking path and is enclosed by a high fence.
“It is very safe, and very private. It offers a sense of comfort,” Smith said.
Primrose Lane also has private porches and family rooms for families to gather with their resident, as well as game rooms and three activity centers.
