BURRILLVILLE – The Burrillville Emergency Management Agency is reminding residents that a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for the region and that a ban is now in place in town on all outdoor burning.
EMA and Burrillville fire departments posted electronic signs this week notifying travelers of the risk.
“We’ve put it on roadside billboards,” said Burrillville EMA Director Michael Gingell.
“Weather alert: Red Flag Warning,” one advises. “Elevated fire risk due to weather conditions.”
Gingell noted that town fire departments have been responding to homes where residents have ignored the warning.
“We still have had a couple people doing recreational burning,” he said.
The National Weather Service re-issued a Red Flag Warning for Northwest Providence County on Friday, Nov. 1 noting that wind gusts of up to 30 mph are expected with humidity as low as 44 percent.
“Any fires that start may spread rapidly and become difficult to extinguish,” noted NWS.
The Pascoag Fire Department also warned locals that the light rain earlier this week had not eliminated the danger.
“We still need significant, soaking rain,” PFD noted. “Please continue to avoid any and all outdoor fires. Dispose of smoking materials and stove/fireplace ashes carefully and appropriately. Outdoor fires can burn deeper into the ground than you may realize.”
