Comical hypnotist, recycling change & genealogy: Seven things to know in North Smithfield this week

Paving

T. Miozzi Paving is notifying residents that paving of Tifft Road, Laurel Lane, Grange Road and Rocky Hill Road is expected to be completed by the end of this week. The contractor first published notification of the pending work to begin on Monday, Oct. 28, and noted this week that paving will begin on Monday, Nov. 4, with Tifft Road and Laurel Lane to be completed first, with work to be done between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily.

To help expedite the work, the town is asking residents to move all vehicles off these roads. There will be limited access to the area for the entire time Miozzi is working on these roadways, and the only traffic will be for emergencies. Flaggers are also expected to be on site and the release notes that work will continue on Election Day Tuesday, Nov. 5.

The release noted that the work could be cancelled without notice due to the weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Questions can be directed to contact the North Smithfield Highway Division at (401) 767-2200 Extension 348.

Comical hypnotist

The North Smithfield High School Class of 2027 will hold a fundraiser on Monday, Nov. 4, with an interactive show from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the school at 412 Greenville Road. Guests are invited to become part of a comical hypnotist’s show or just watch the fun with tickets available at the door for $15.

Election Day

Election Day is finally here and Town Hall offices at 83 Green St. as well as public schools, will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 5, with the building only open as a polling location. The town’s five voting locations will be open on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters unsure about their polling location can find it here, along with sample ballots.

Fall hours

Goodwin Brothers Farm Stand has announced that regular season hours are now over for 2024 and starting this week, the business will be open Monday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Going forward this month, the store will still have winter squashes, lettuce, cucumbers, honey, apples and more. Their last day for the 2024 season will be Monday, Nov. 25.

Recycling change

The town’s Trash & Recycling Department is notifying residents that Wednesday, Nov. 6 will be the last Wednesday the recycling center at 281 Quaker Highway will be open. The recycling center will no longer be open on Wednesdays after November 6th.

The center will continue to keep its Saturday hours from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. hours the same. This Saturday, Nov. 9 will also be a lawn and leaf collection day.

Beginning Genealogy

 The North Smithfield Public Library at 20 Main St. will a genealogy workshop for beginners on Thursday, Nov. 7.

“Have you ever wondered where your family comes from? Ever questioned why or when your great-grandparents moved from their home country to the United States? Or do you just wonder where you came from? If yes, then you’ve taken the first steps to uncover your family’s history,” library officials noted in a release.

Guests are invited to attend and learn how to start uncovering the clues to tell their family’s story. Topics will include conducting family interviews, creating a family tree,  searching for historical records and more. The event is presented by Lynne Pelletier, a member of the North Smithfield Heritage Association and amateur genealogist.

Slatersville Tour

The Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park, in partnership with the North Smithfield Heritage Association will hold a Veteran’s Day tour of Slatersville on Saturday, Nov. 9 starting at 10 a.m. as part of their fall walk series. Explore Slatersville Cemetery with a park ranger and learn the stories of local veterans who served in the Civil War. Participants will meet in front of Heritage Hall at 101 Green St.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Park & Recreation Department will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 6 starting at 6 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.
