Vet ceremony, Thanksgiving food drive & Holiday Shop: Five things to know in North Smithfield this week

Veterans Day

The Leclair Kozlik Logan Bassett VFW Post 6342 will conduct the annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11 at Scouters Hall next to Pacheco Park at 13 Main St. Veterans, town officials, and local Scouts will conduct the ceremony.  The Scouts will lead a procession and post the National Colors and lead a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. 

Following the ceremony, the post will offer a free collation. Post members welcome everyone and encourage you to attend.

Trash pickup is also delayed this week and Town Hall is closed in celebration of Veterans Day.

Food drive

The North Smithfield High School National Honor Society is holding its annual holiday food drive with the goal of providing Thanksgiving food baskets for town families in need. Non-perishable food items can be dropped off in either of the foyers of the school through Monday, Nov. 25. Any extra items will be donated to the North Smithfield Food Pantry.

Families in need of extra help this holiday season can fill out a confidential survey here.

Ukulele lesson

North Smithfield Library at 20 Main St. will offer an introduction to ukulele basics with instructor, Jude Pelchat on Wednesday, Nov. 13, starting at 6:30 p.m. Borrow a ukulele or bring your own. Both adults and children 10 and up are welcome to attend. 

On Thursday, Nov 14 starting at 6 p.m. get tips and ideas for exploring your family’s past at the library with a program on navigating ancestry presented by Lynne Pelletier, a member of the North Smithfield Heritage Association and amateur genealogist.

Holiday shop

The North Smithfield Heritage Association will host a Holiday Shop on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Forestdale School at 190 School St. Get started on your holiday shopping with NSHA merchandise including ornaments, hand crafted birdhouse, puzzles, calendars, books maps and throws.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Fire & Rescue Service Board of Directors will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 12 starting at 6:30 p.m. at 1470 Providence Pike. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Planning Board will hold a meeting on Thursday, Nov. 14 starting at 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 83 Green St. The agenda is here.
