GLOCESTER – Every season in the garden, like every season in life, has rewards and challenges, and every season holds moments that matter—if we pay attention.
It is with this premise that Debbie Tillinghast has penned her most recent book, “Over the Garden Wall, Finding Moments that Matter,” the fourth from the town-based author.
Featuring lyrical stories and poetry, the book is the first of its kind for the author, who has utilized different styles for each foray into self expression.
Tillinghast grew up on Prudence Island in Narragansett Bay, and first began writing as she embarked on a quest to reconnect with her roots. Her first book, The Ferry Home, is a memoir about her childhood on the island.
Her second book, a fictional story about a woman’s journey after a painful divorce dubbed “A Dream Worth Keeping,” was inspired by her solitary walks along Glocester roads.
Last year, Tillinghast released “A Gift of Cookies, A Gift of Love,” filled with recipes and stories from her family’s cookie tradition. Her writing has appeared in Country magazine and her poetry has been featured in eight anthologies published by the Association of Rhode Island Authors.
In “Over the Garden Wall,” the author shares personal moments with the hope to remind readers to enjoy the simple pleasures of being present.
“We often miss the details in life as we rush headlong through the day,” notes a summary on the book. “When we are present, and notice the moments, it increases our inner peace and well-being. When we don’t pay attention, everything passes quickly, like dreams forgotten in an instant, and we wonder where the days have gone.”
A retired teacher and nutrition educator, Tillinghast is a self-professed lover of nature, and writes stories and essays that reflect her connection to the natural world and the changing seasons.
At a book talk at the Harmony Library on Wednesday, Dec. 4, she will share what inspired her to write the latest, and read excerpts highlighting her connection to moments that matter. The presentation starts at 6:30 p.m., and refreshments will be served after the talk. Signed copies of the book will be available.
Guests are asked to register for the program in advance at www.glocesterlibraries.org so enough refreshments are available.
