GLOCESTER – In effort to spread the word to village businesses and residents about help available through the Chepachet Village Septic Improvement Program town officials will host a series of drop-in style coffee hours over the coming months, with the first scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22.
The program kicked off in September, making technical and financial assistance to property owners in Chepachet with the help of some $765,000 in grant funding. Part of a decades-long effort to spur economic and historic revitalization in the center of town, the Septic Improvement Program aims to bring about upgrades to wastewater systems throughout the village, restore the quality of the Chepachet River and reduce the number of properties using point of entry systems on drinking water wells.
The initiative is focused on properties within 200 feet of the river that currently rely on cesspools, holding tanks and Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems in the public well radius. Led by Town Planner Karen Scott, town officials are now exploring opportunities for innovative and alternative septic systems, educating property owners of different possibilities available and, where individual systems are not feasible, looking for opportunities to for neighboring property owners to work together for mutually beneficial solutions.
Funding for the program was provided through the Environmental Protection Agency, Southeast New England Program and American Rescue Plan Act grants. The money will be used to assist property owners and residents in Chepachet Village with septic system upgrades – designed to safeguard public health and the environment.
Those who would like more information on the program are invited to attend coffee drop-in office hours in November, December and early January. Attendees will have the chance to hear more about the program in an informal setting, ask questions or file a statement of interest form.
