BURRILLVILLE – A Pascoag man is facing charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving after flipping his vehicle while reportedly visiting a number of local bars.
Robert Young, 67, was arrested just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 after police were called to a rollover crash on Union Avenue. Officers reportedly found a black Cadillac at rest upside down on its roof in a wooded area off the roadway by a sharp turn at Centennial Street.
According to the arrest report, witnesses had helped Young escape the vehicle by the time police arrived and he did not appear to have any injuries. But officers say Young was struggling to walk and stand up straight, and report detecting a strong smell of alcohol on his breath.
“Officers observed the seatbelt in the locked position, straight upward, indicating the seatbelt was not in use at the time of the crash,” the report notes.
Two witnesses told officers that they had followed Young’s vehicle out of concern after observing his impairment. Young had reportedly said he left Spritzer’s Bar after closing to go to Toti’s Tavern, which was also closed. He showed more signs of impairment during sobriety tests and vomited on his way to the rescue, according to police.
He later told officers he began his night at Elayna’s before going to Spritzer’s and that he drank until the end of the Mike Tyson fight, according to the report.
Young was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for his injuries and charged with DUI, BAC unknown, 1st offense, and reckless driving and other offenses against public safety, 1st offense. He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance and is due back in the 6th District Court on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
