WOONSOCKET – Police have arrested a Chepachet man on charges of repeatedly sexually assaulting a girl who was 13 years old when the incidents took place, in 2021.
Seth D. Chauvin, 43, of 26 Reservoir Road, is free on $25,000 personal recognizance after an appearance in Sixth District Court, according to the judiciary’s web site.
Chauvin surrendered to the Woonsocket Police Department on Dec. 30 on an arrest warrant charging him with three counts of second-degree child molestation, a crime defined as unlawful touching or fondling, investigators say.
Members of the detective division obtained the warrant after the victim, now 17 years old, came to police headquarters with family members to file a formal complaint against Chauvin.
She told police that Chauvin touched her inappropriately on three occasions between March 2021 and April 2021.
One of the incidents happened during what she described as an episode of playful wrestling that Chauvin pushed too far at a home in the Fairmount section of the city.
Another happened in mid-March 2021 when she agreed to take a ride with him to go to the store. They stopped along the way for more than 20 minutes while Chauvin allegedly groped her. She told him to stop and tried to get out of the car, but Chauvin told her the doors were locked, according to the victim. He later dropped her off at a relative’s house. They never went to a store.
She had a similar experience at a home in the Park Square area in early April 2021, the girl told police. She was on a sofa when Chauvin allegedly approached her and began massaging her inappropriately. It stopped when she told Chauvin she needed to use the bathroom and then insisted she wanted to sleep.
Chauvin doesn’t have much of a prior criminal record outside of two arrests for driving on a suspended license, both from 2016. One of the offenses was charged by the Glocester Police Department, the other by North Smithfield Police Department, according to the judiciary’s web site.
When police tried to serve Chauvin with an arrest warrant, the first place they looked – police reports don’t say why – was at 823 Social St. An unidentified female there told police Chauvin no longer lived at the apartment. He surrendered after police contacted him by phone.
Chauvin is due back in court for another hearing on Wednesday, April 2. In the meantime, the judiciary’s web site says, he’s been ordered to keep away from the alleged victim.
