NORTH SMITHFIELD – A fire Sunday morning destroyed a breezeway and the top portion of a garage attached to a home on Greenville Road, but was knocked down by firefighters before engulfing the house.
North Smithfield Fire & Rescue Service was called to the unoccupied home at 132 Greenville Road around 7 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5. Canteen 4 also responded to the two-alarm blaze, which was largely extinguished within the hour, although firefighters remained on the smoldering scene as of 11:30 a.m.
The home was reportedly under renovation and vacant at the time of the fire, which started at the back of the structure.
The blaze gutted the breezeway between the garage and the main body of the single family home, a one-story ranch built in 1946, according to town records.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
