Tree pickup

The town will pick up discarded Christmas trees left curbside starting today, Monday. Jan. 6, and continuing through Friday, Jan. 17. Residents can also drop off their trees at the Highway Department at 281 Quaker Highway on Saturdays during recycling hours from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The week of the 6th is also a recycling pickup week in town.

Wind chills

Forecasters are warning that a new surge of wind across New England will start on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and continue until Thursday, Jan 9, with temperatures well below the historical average. Wind chills in the single digits above and below zero are expected. Cold temperatures, blustery northwest winds and dry weather will prevail for much of this week, and high temperatures may run some 10 degrees below normal.

New ownership

Rise Up Nutrition at 900 Victory Highway is now under new ownership, with Caroline and David Najera officially taking over the business on Monday, Dec. 30. The Slatersville Plaza shop, which sells healthy shakes, energizing teas, protein coffees and more, was first opened in 2019, and was run for the past year by Alyssa and Jay Bailey.

Toiletry drive

Help North Smithfield High School student Sophia Parente with her senior project this month by donating toiletries for those in need. Parente is currently collecting toothbrushes, toothpaste, diapers, feminine products, bar soap, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, and hair brushes and combs. Donations can be dropped off in the main lobby of all three town public schools or at North Smithfield Public Library at 20 Main St.
