At Levy Rink on Saturday, the Burrillville boys hockey team and the Lincoln Lions signed a promise not to drive while impaired. The petition was organized by the Burrillville Prevention Action Coalition in honor of Matthew Dennison and the Dennison family joined both teams for a pregame talk.

Holiday trash

Town offices are closed, and there will be no trash or recycling picked up on Monday, Jan. 20 in celebration of the Martin Luther King Day. Pick up will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.

Questions can be directed to the Department of Public Works – Refuse & Recycling at (401) 568-4440 ext. 12.

Trash reminder

Speaking of trash, the town has seen an increase in the number of contaminated loads at the landfill recently and is reminding residents to do their part by using care with what is placed in the recycling bin. Plastic bags should never be placed in recycling and neither should clothing, food, textiles, tarps, leaf or yard debris, construction debris, ropes, hoses, scrap metal, paint or cables.

Rejected loads cost the town an average of $550, and result in the entire load being disposed of as solid waste. Information on how to dispose of various items in Burrillville can be found here.

Training

For the next few weeks, local fire departments will be participating in training exercises on Church Street opposite Broad Street, thanks to the donation of a structure by Pascoag Community Baptist Church. Firefighters will rehearse various operational scenarios, and locals should be advised that the presence of firefighters on the roof or smoke coming from the building is a routine part of training exercises.

Mini-bus driver

The town of Burrillville is looking to hire a part time mini bus driver to help with Senior Services to serve in the Department of Public Works. The position requires transporting elderly and handicapped residents to doctors appointments and shopping both within and outside of town limits.

More information on the job and how to apply can be found in an ad on the Burrillville NOW page here.
