Stay warm
With extreme cold this week following our latest winter storm, the Glocester Emergency Management Agency is reminding residents of populations that are vulnerable to the weather. Age and certain conditions make the body less able to regulate temperature, a post from the agency notes. Newborns, elderly, the unhoused, those with chronic illness and outdoor workers are particularly vulnerable to the cold.
Residents are reminded to dress in loose layers and cover all exposed skin; to consume hot foods and warm drinks, but avoid caffeine and alcohol; and to check on family, friends and neighbors.
Weather is expected to warm up a bit beginning on Thursday, Jan. 24.
Bird flu
The Connecticut Department of Agriculture has published notice that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza has been confirmed in a backyard flock of birds in New London County. This week, 60 dead birds were also found in Plymouth, Mass.

Bird owners are advised to enhance biosecurity practices to protect their flocks. Owners should keep wild birds and rodents out of poultry houses and coops; ensure poultry does not have contact with migratory waterfowl or other wild birds; wash hands and boots before and after entering the poultry area; buy birds from reputable sources to receive heathy birds; restrict traffic onto and off their property and have a written biosecurity plan in place.
Flock owners in neighboring are encouraged to report anything unusual, especially sick or dead birds, to CT DoAg at (860) 713-2505 or [email protected].
In Rhode Island, residents should report sick birds or unusual bird deaths to either the RI state veterinarian at (401) 222-2781 or to the USDA at (508) 363-2290.
