Estates & Trusts, road closure & a gravestone win: Seven and a half things to know in North Smithfield this week

Restoration work continued this week at the second floor of the Memorial Town Building, where volunteers with the North Smithfield Heritage Association have been painting and fixing holes in the walls and ceiling.

Closure

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation will be closing the I-295 North and South off-ramps to Route 146 – Exit 18A/18B – from 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights for steel beam placement as part of the latest stage in the project to rehabilitate to roadway. Drivers are advised to follow signed detours. 

NSHA win

The North Smithfield Heritage Association has won a national contest for gravestone restoration. Atlas Preservation notified the organization that it was selected as a winner in the Gravestone & Monument Repair category. The group’s work will be showcased on Atlas’s website, social media and winner announcement email to subscribers, and the award includes $100 towards gravestone restoration supplies.

More snow

If you’re planning your week, keep in mind there will likely be more winter weather headed our way this week, with the latest storm expected in the evening on Wednesday, Feb. 12 into Thursday morning. Early forecasts see a wintry mix moving in late Wednesday evening bringing snow, sleet, ice and rain.

Estates & Trusts

Sensory-friendly Saturday

North Smithfield Library at 20 Main St. will hold Sensory-Friendly Saturday on February 15, a drop-in program open to ages 3-8. No registration is necessary and all abilities are welcome to the event, to be held from 11 a.m. to noon.

Coffee with a Councilor

Town Council member David Punchak has plans to host an upcoming Coffee with a Councilor at Revive () at (). There will be free coffee for those who attend and bring a discussion topic – but discussion can not be about his opinions on current or future agenda items. Punchak said he is considering holding the event on Saturday or Sunday, Feb. 15 or 16. Watch for confirmation on his Facebook page here.

The North Smithfield Asset Management Commission will hold a meeting on Monday, Feb. 10 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the North Smithfield Police station at 575 Smithfield Road. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield Historic District Commission will hold a meeting on Monday, Feb. 10 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Memorial Town Building at 1 Main St. The agenda is here.

The North Smithfield School Committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 11 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of North Smithfield Middle School at 1850 Providence Pike. The agenda is here.

Cleanup

As a bonus thing this week for those planning their schedule, next Monday is President’s Day, and the North Smithfield Heritage Association will celebrate with a clean up of Mammoth Mill Park on Mill Street just by the Blackstone line. Volunteers will gather at the park on Monday, Feb. 17 starting at 9 a.m. to clear trash, brush and trees along the old mill stream. The public is invited to participate.
