GLOCESTER – A lieutenant with the Glocester Police Department has been nominated for an award recognizing commitment to philanthropy and community impact, and is now in the running for the statewide award.

Lt. Jeffrey Jenison is among those in the running for the Rhode Island Special Olympics Elwood Johnson Outstanding Service Award.

Jenison, a North Kingstown resident, has worked for the department since 2004. He has been recognized several times for his work in Glocester over the past two decades, including quick action in saving a driver from a sinking vehicle while serving as a patrolman in 2016.

Jenison was first promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2019, and later lieutenant. He serves as the department’s public records officer, as a member of the Glocester Addiction Assistance Program and is a Task Force officer for the Drug Enforcement Agency. In 2024, Jenison was recognized this month by the United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Island for outstanding contributions to public safety.

“This prestigious honor recognizes members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run community who are dedicated to philanthropy and making a lasting impact,” noted the department in announcing the latest honor. “Lt. Jenison’s unwavering commitment to the Glocester community and his leadership in organizing the Special Olympics Torch Run – North Leg make him truly deserving of this recognition. His dedication to giving back is an inspiration to us all.”

The award was established and named in honor of longtime law enforcement member and Special Olympics Rhode Island supporter, Elwood Johnson Jr., in 2023. Each Rhode Island law enforcement department or agency nominates one member of their department or agency who has had significant positive impact on the mission of Special Olympics Rhode Island.

According to a note on the award from Special Olympics RI, nominees represent the best of LETR’s commitment “to provide opportunities for athletes to empower and transform themselves, their communities, and the world.”

Nominees are selected as their department or agency’s recipient and become eligible to win the state award.

The statewide awardee will be announced at the Law Enforcement Torch Run conference on Friday, Feb. 28.
