Massachusetts man fatally injured on Burrillville hiking trail

BURRILLVILLE − A falling tree branch on a hiking trail in Burrillville landed on a visitor from Massachusetts is believed to have caused his death.

A 63-year-old man from Uxbridge was found unconscious on Nipmuc Trail around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7, according to reports. The victim’s family went looking for him after he didn’t return home and found him beneath the large branch.

Authorities are reportedly investigating his cause of death, according to media reports.

The trail, accessed from Round Top Road, was hit with high winds that blanketed the region throughout the day on Friday, causing some 32,000 power outages in the area.

  1. Such a tragic occurrence on the Nipmuc Trail. Condolences to the family and friends of this hiker.
    Hiking in the thick woods is never a good choice when experiencing high winds as was the case last week. There is very little time to react to such an event and even if you hear a loud crack and look up it is often times too late. if someone is wearing ear buds listening to music or even having a telephone conversation you’re even more at a disadvantage.
    Moral of this post, always be aware of your surroundings when hiking in the woods and of course letting someone know of your intended hiking location.
