
Yard waste
Spring pickup of yard waste in town began on Saturday, April 26. Yard waste will be collected on Saturdays for all residents, excluding Saturdays that end in a holiday week. The public works garage is also open for drop offs on Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The following rules apply:
- Accepted yard waste must be in brown, biodegradable lawn bags or loose in cans clearly marked.
- Small bundles of branches are also accepted. Bundles should be under 2 inches in diameter and smaller than 3 feet in length.
- RIRRC is turning the yard waste into compost. No plastic bags, trash, stones, or non-organic waste can be mixed in.
- Resident are asked to re-bag any deteriorating yard waste bags as the crew will not be able to collect them.

Kindergarten support session
North Smithfield Elementary School at 2214 Providence Pike will hold a support session to help caregivers enrolling a child in kindergarten for the 2025/2026 school year on Wednesday, April 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. Registration is open here for children who will be age 5 on or before August 31.

Dog licenses
Time is running out to apply for a dog license in town. All dogs in town are required to be licensed by Wednesday, April 30 and a $5 late fee will be applied to late applications. The cost is $6 per dog and proof of rabies vaccination is required.

Northmen 5K
The annual Northmen 5K walk/run will take place on Saturday, May 3 starting at 9 a.m. at North Smithfield Middle School at 1850 Providence Pike. Registration costs $25, or $20 for students and veterans, and can be completed at secondwindtimeing.com any time up to or on the day of the race. Proceeds will be donated to the Special Olympics and the North Smithfield Athletic Association.
The North Smithfield Police Department is reminding residents that roads will be closed during the event from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. as follows: Providence Pike, Greenville Road from Providence Pike to Grange, Pomona and Rocky Hill onto Grange, and Providence Pike at Brayton.

Soil testing
North Smithfield Public Library at 20 Main St. will host University of Rhode Island Master Gardeners on Saturday, May 3 to answer gardening and test soil samples for visitors. Drop in with your sample between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. or register by visiting https://northsmithfield.librarycalendar.com or calling (401) 767-2780.

Spring Artisan Fair
The Beef Barn Restaurant will hold its Spring Artisan Fair on Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the restaurant at 200 Industrial Drive. Shop with dozens of local vendors with unique, handcrafted goods on the sprawling 10 acre property.
The rain date for the event is Sunday, May 4.
