Back to school

Ponaganset and Glocester Elementary School students return to school on Wednesday, August 27, and district calendars for the coming year can be found here and here. Information on bus routes for the regional school district is available here, West Glocester here and Fogarty Memorial here.

School supplies

Speaking of back to school, Glocester elementary school parents still in need of backpacks and school supplies are invited to stop by the Human Services Department at Glocester Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike on Tuesday, August 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The supply giveaway was organized by Carla Zimmerman for a fourth consecutive year.

Drug awareness & Prevention

On Thursday, August 28 starting at 7 p.m., the Chepachet Grange and community partners will host a drug awareness prevention event at the Grange Hall at 28 Chopmist Hill Road. The free event will feature information, resources, activities, free swag and giveaways, along with a poster contest for students and adults. All are invited to attend.

Cooperative opening

It is grand opening weekend of the 2025 season for the Village Art Cooperative at the Job Armstrong Building 1181 Putnam Pike. Visit the seasonal shop Saturday, August 30; Sunday, August 31 or Monday, Sept. 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wasting away

Hill’s Tavern at 417 Putnam Pike will throw a Jimmy Buffet-themed party on Sunday, August 31 starting at 2 p.m. with cheeseburgers in paradise, fishbowl drinks, and island vibes that’ll have you searching for your lost shaker of salt. Guests are invited to dress in their best tropical threads and bring their parrothead spirit.

Cornhole tournament

Oakleaf Family Campground is still seeking players for a cornhole tournament to be held on Saturday, Sept. 6, with registration to start at 10 a.m. at the campground at 43 Oak Leaf Way. The event will include a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and prizes for the top teams. The cost to register is $60 per team by calling (401) 568-4446.

Proceeds from the event go toward scholarships for Ponaganset and Tollgate High School seniors.

Town meetings

The Glocester Recreation Commission will hold a meeting on Tuesday, August 26 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike. The agenda is here.

The Glocester Historic District Commission will hold a meeting on Wednesday, August 27 starting at 7 p.m. at Town Hall at 1145 Putnam Pike. The agenda is here.

The Glocester Zoning Board meeting originally scheduled for Thursday, August 28 has been cancelled.
