GLOCESTER – After a brief stay in Glocester, an oceanic bird rarely seen on land will be bidding the state farewell this weekend when a town-based bird rehab brings it back to the ocean.

Congress of the Birds has been caring for a juvenile Atlantic Puffin first found in a back yard in Wrentham, Mass. on Sunday, Oct. 5.

The facility, opened in town last year, is said to be the only wild bird-specific rehabilitation center in the state. The non-profit picked up the rarely-seen visitor to New England with plans to release it.

“To keep helping patients like this puffin — and the thousands of songbirds, raptors, and seabirds who come through our doors each year — we need your support,” noted Founder and Executive Director Sheida Soleimani.

Soleimani built the release center for the rehabilitated birds on a donated 42-acre lot off Evans Road, and said the nonprofit now needs donations to go toward food, medicine, enclosures and other expenses to keep the sanctuary open.

Puffins are deep sea birds typically only found on land when at breeding colonies – most often found on islands in the middle of the ocean.

Staff from the sanctuary reportedly plans to travel to Provincetown, Mass. on Saturday, Oct. 11 to take a boat and deliver the puffin back to the ocean.

Donations to the facility can be made here.
