Groundbreaking

Harmony Library at 195 Putnam Pike will host a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Community Room on Wednesday, Dec. 10, starting at 2 p.m. Attendees will include Gov. Dan McKee, Library Director Gayle Wolstenholme, Glocester Town Council President William Worthy and Foster Town Council President Steven Plouffe, as well as other state and local officials.

A federal Community Learning Center Grant will pay for the addition of the new 30 by 30-foot room, which will accommodate larger audiences and enhance opportunities for health, education, and employment programs. The grant is federally-funded, then granted to towns through the state. The town of Foster gifted their CLC grant to Glocester and combined with the Glocester CLC grant, make it possible for the Harmony Library to add the new 900 square-foot addition for education and cultural events; renovate existing space to provide dedicated resources for employment, education, and telehealth; and create one multipurpose room, one tele-medicine room, and two computer labs.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony. For information on the event, contact Wolstenholme, at (401) 949-2850.

Fireplace dos and don’ts

The Chepachet Fire Department is reminding residents to stay warm safely amid this week’s cold snap. Residents are reminded not to use unseasoned wood, not to overstuff the firebox and to never leave the fire unattended. Fireplace and wood stove users should check and replace detectors as needed and have a regular schedule for professional maintenance.

“But be sure to take proper precautions to make sure you can enjoy it safely,” the department said of the added warmth. “Don’t forget to have your chimney swept and inspected.”
