GLOCESTER – Ponaganset High School students in the Career and Technical Education programs for education and visual arts held a story hour and art activity for local preschoolers on Wednesday morning.

The event, which took place in the library of PHS, showcased the efforts of the school’s CTE students while benefitting local families, who were asked to pre-register.
“This event is a fantastic example of our CTE programs in action,” said Karyn Sarkis, director of student support for the regional school district. “It is a hands-on project where our students are designing and facilitating the entire activity, putting their classroom learning into practice by teaching and mentoring the youngest members of our community.”

Parents and guardians, and their three-to-five year olds, gathered in the school library to hear education CTE students read “The Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister, and then the children created their own rainbow fish art with the visual arts students, said Heather Bovenzi, visual arts teacher.

“CTE students did a fantastic job greeting school visitors, reading the story, providing discussion questions, and supporting the creation of beautiful rainbow fish,” Bovenzi said.
Bovenzi’s visual arts students and Andrea DeNoncour’s education CTE students hope to collaborate again and host a similar event in the spring, Bovenzi said.
