Adopt a Hydrant
North Smithfield Fire & Rescue Service Inc. is reminding residents that there are more than 150 fire hydrants and cisterns – or underground water tanks – in town, and they need the community’s help to keep all clean and free of snow and ice. Fire crews do go out to clear the essential fire-fighting infrastructure after a storm, but with the large number, it can take a long time to get to all of them.
“Any help we can get from the community to accelerate the process would be greatly appreciated,” noted NSFD in a release.
Residents should avoid shoveling, plowing or snow blowing onto a hydrant and ideally, the water source should have three feet of clearance on each side.
