NORTH SMITHFIELD – Narragansett Council – Scouting America recognized two volunteer leaders for their contributions to the lives of local youth.

Joshua Silva, a unit commissioner and assistant scoutmaster for Troop 1139 Slatersville, and Kevin Thompson, den leader for Pack 7, received awards at the organization’s Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the Venice de Milo in Swansea on Wednesday, Feb. 4.

Silva, who works as a senior fire protection sales representative at JC Cannistraro, received one of the council’s highest honors: the Silver Beaver Award. Introduced in 1931, the award recognizes distinguished service to youth and the community.

“Recipients of this award are registered Scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council,” the council notes of the honor.

Silva has also volunteered outside of scouting, as a religious education teacher for 10 years and as a member of the Knights of Columbus, and has contributed to town committees in North Smithfield and spent years as a volunteer firefighter.

In his current role, Silva provides guidance and leadership to Troop 1139, Troop 438, and Pack 7 Slatersville.

In a release on the award, the council noted that Silva’s proudest Scouting achievement is raising two Eagle Scout sons. When asked why he stays so active, the organization notes Silva responded “I have seen what this program can do for our youth—the positive development of skills and leadership.”

Thompson, who also serves as new member coordinator for the pack, received the George Meany Award, presented annually to union members who have made a significant and positive impact on youth in their communities through dedicated volunteer service.

A former Scout who has served as an adult leader for the past two years, Thompson’s received an award that “recognizes individuals who exemplify the values of both organized labor and Scouting by giving generously of their time and talents to support youth development, leadership, and community engagement.

“His passion for Scouting comes from wanting to give his son the same formative experiences he enjoyed as a young Scout—and his commitment shows in the joy and growth seen in every Scout he works with,” stated the council.

“Huge congratulations to Josh and Kevin Thompson on their well‑deserved awards,” the council noted. “We’re so proud of the dedication and leadership they bring to our Scouting community.”
