Blasting, basketball face-off & a ‘St. Paddy’s meat raffle’: Seven things to know in North Smithfield this week

Blasting

The town of North Smithfield is warning residents that blasting will take place on Tuesday, March 10 between 11 a.m .and 3 p.m. at Material Sand & Stone’s quarry on Pine Hill Road.

Family literacy

North Smithfield Elementary School at 2214 Providence Pike will hold Family Literacy Night on Thursday, March 12 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., to feature a book fair and visit from author Paul Reynolds. All families of NSES students are invited to attend.

Basketball face-off

Members of the North Smithfield Police Department have challenged staff from North Smithfield High School to a charity basketball game to benefit the Unity Ball. The game will take place on Friday, March 13 in the gym of the high school at () Greenville Road starting at 6 p.m. All are invited to attend with a spectator fee to benefit the cause.

the North Smithfield Fire Department recently donated a vintage wooden table, which Ruthie Johnson used when teaching kindergarten classes at the fire station, to the North Smithfield Heritage Association.

Meat raffle

The Island at 1600 Victory Highway will hold a St. Paddy’s meat raffle on Saturday, March 14 starting at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 and can be purchased in advance at the bar.

This event is open to the public and you do not need to be present to win.

Stop the Bleed

There is still time to sign up for the North Smithfield Emergency Management Agency’s hands-only CPR/AED and Stop the Bleed training, to be held on Saturday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Scouter’s Hall. The free, three hour, semi-annual life-saving program is open to the first 50 North Smithfield residents to register, and will be taught in accordance with the American Heart Association. Certificates will be awarded upon completion of the program.

Incidents such as cardiac arrest choking and serious bleeding do take place and most by-standers want to help until professional care arrives. The program aims to change by-standers into by-doers and to help others save lives.

Grants

The North Smithfield Heritage Association, which is also serving as the North Smithfield 250th Committee in planning events to celebrate the national birthday, was awarded two grants from the Rhode Island 250th Commission. A grant of $5,000 will be used to produce two wayfaring signs commemorating the role of Union Village during the Revolutionary War. A second grant of $4,000 will be used to produce a video documentary about Union Village.
