WOONSOCKET/NORTH SMITHFIELD – Saying she hopes to represent her neighbors rather than corporate interests, a Woonsocket resident has announced her campaign for District 49 in Woonsocket and North Smithfield.
Veronicka Vega, a Democrat, will hold a campaign launch party on Monday, March 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lops Brewing at 122 N. Main St. Woonsocket, Suite 1A.
The first time political candidate is running for the state representative seat currently held by Jon Brien, an independent first elected in 2022.
In announcing the news, Vega said she felt empowered to do more for her community after dabbling in advocacy work last year.
“I’ve lived in this district for over half of my life, from Fairmount, the North End, to Hamlet,” she noted.
Vega graduated from Woonsocket High School and attended college in state.
“It’s a decision I’ll never regret,” she said. “I love my community and I know that if I’m elected to represent my neighbors that I’ll be thinking of them at the State House – not corporate interest groups and lobbyists.”
Vega said that if elected, she’ll advocate for affordable housing and fully-funded public education.
“We need a leader who will protect our greenspace and fight for clean air and water,” Vega noted. “We need a leader who will invest in real economic development, in building an economy that works for everyone.”
“I’m running to be that representative, and bring the voices of our communities down to Smith Hill,” she said.
