BURRILLVILLE – Burrillville Animal Control issued a rabies alert on Thursday, April 23, noting that in the past 30 days, three raccoons have tested positive for rabies, all of which came from in different areas of town.

The department warned residents that all pets should be kept current on rabies vaccinations, noting businesses including ShotVet, Tractor Supply and PetCo have reoccurring clinics, or appointments can be made with a regular veterinarian.

Animal Control Officer Kerry Courtemanche Brissette said the town is also currently working to set up a rabies vaccine clinic.

Fortunately, all domestic animals involved in the recent incidents in town were current on their rabies vaccination and received boosters as a precaution. The department noted that vaccinating livestock is also important, even when it is not legally required.

Animal Control offered the following tips for those concerned about the virus:

*Keep pets current on rabies vaccination.

*Report any human or domestic animal/livestock contact with wildlife.

*Keep dogs leashed, and cats indoors if possible.

*Do not handle or feed wildlife. Observe wildlife from a distance and report abnormal behavior or signs of illness. Be alert and aware. Just because an animal is out during the day, does not necessarily mean it is sick or rabid. Spring brings mating season and babies, and residents will see much more wildlife as they search for mates, look for new territory, and gather more food to provide for their young.

*Secure trash, clean grills and keep your property clean so as not to attract wildlife.

*Do not leave pet food outdoors. If you are feeding an outdoor or feral cat, leave food for 20 minutes twice a day and then remove, and they will learn the schedule. If you are feeding free roaming or feral cats, the law does provide conditions that you are legally obligated to ensure they are vaccinated for rabies.
