GLOCESTER – Four months after the resignation of a former Ponaganset High School gym teacher accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a former student, the Rhode Island State Police have filed felony charges.

Alisha Crins, 39, of Cranston has been charged with two counts of third degree sexual assault in an indictment filed Friday, Feb. 27.

According to an affidavit filed in October, a student who graduated last year filed a formal complaint with state police against the former teacher.

The student said Crins, who previously worked for the North Smithfield School District, sent him flirty text messages and nude photos. The then-married teacher, who is now divorced, was also a program instructor for the PHS Health & Fitness/EMT CTE program. She resigned amid the state police investigation last year.

Both Crins and the student told police the relationship did not escalate to intercourse, but that they did kiss in his junior year of high school.

The state criminal database lists the offense date as April 1, 2024.

An arraignment in the case is scheduled to be held at 9:30 a.m. in Superior Court on Wednesday, March 18.
